
Ambassador Thomas Shannon and Chilean Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs Edgardo Riveros met on December 4 to discuss global, regional, and bilateral issues of mutual interest including the promotion of democracy and human rights, peacekeeping and security, economic growth and development through trade, the environment, and other topics.
This High Level Bilateral Political Consultative Mechanism is the premier forum for dialogue between the two countries. This engagement demonstrates the breadth and depth of the U.S. – Chile relationship, now in the third century of diplomatic relations, and the shared commitment to advancing economic growth and opportunity, transparency, human rights and the rule of law, protection of the environment, military and law enforcement cooperation, scientific collaboration, increased educational exchange under 100,000 Strong in the Americas, and expansion of institutional linkages such as the University of California Davis – University of Chile academic exchange program in existence since 1965.
On December 3, Director of Policy Planning David McKean met with his Chilean Counterpart Ambassador Maria del Carmen Dominguez to discuss cooperation and engagement on regional and global issues.
The United States welcomes the opportunity for engagement with Chile and looks forward to continued close cooperation.
