On July 2nd, Chargé d’Affaires Jeffrey Vick and Senior Consular Assistant Gabriel Lathrop gave a presentation about the importance of consular access to prisoners, as required under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of 1963, at the Gendarmería’s Training Academy.

About 110 undergraduate officers attended the training. The discussion focused on issues like arranging prisoner visits, getting access to interpreters, the birth of an American citizen child in prison, execution of extradition and expulsion orders, and sharing information about the whereabouts of a prisoner.

This training session was the perfect opportunity to expand the relations with Gendarmería and ensure that the newest group of Chilean prison wardens have an understanding of the Vienna Convention and will facilitate access to prisoners when necessary.
