In addition to the $100,000 dollars announced on March 28, the U.S. government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance and the U.S. Department of Defense, is providing an additional $186,000 USD in assistance to areas affected by the recent natural disasters.

Of the $186,000 USD, the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance will provide $100,000 to Caritas Chile to fund water and sanitation projects.

More than half of the remaining $86,000 will be provided by the U.S. Department of Defense to provide water to the Diego de Almagro community via an emergency pumping system. After the need for this emergency pumping system has ended, the equipment will be donated to the city to be used to improve the water supply system.

In addition to the emergency water pumping system, the U.S. Department of Defense is also providing $15,000 in recovery supplies to assist affected communities outside La Serena and $15,000 worth of chainsaws to donate to the National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) to assist with fires in the south of Chile.
